WIFE BEATING: A MEASURE TO DEAL WITH MARITAL DISHARMONY OR A LICENSE FOR MISCONDUCT

Abstract

Wife beating is not a new phenomena rather it has been practiced from pre historic time till today. It is a lind of gender based violence practiced by husbands all over the world especially in muslim society . It is due to the misunderstanding about the position of the women in Islam the presence of injustice and malpractices in contemporary mumslim societies . The reason of denying women rights in Pakistani society could be summed up as lack of education , ignorance about Islamic teachings , feudal and tribl cultural traditions , male dominated patriartial attitudes , poverty , unemployment and misinterpretation regarding precise teaching of Quran and Sunnah . There are many misconception regarding the stance of Islam on wife beating as well.It commonly understood that Islam give permission for wife beating in Quranic  verse 4:34. This article describe the relationship between husband and wife in the light of Quranic verse 4:34 and will explore the sanctions of wife beating and its dimentions . Furthermore it will aim to remove misunderstanding and prejudged opinions related to the concerned issues in the light of Quran and sunnah.
